Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a fusion of the spine. This causes one or two bends with a twist. This can cause a bulge in the back because the ribs rotate with the spine. The medical term for this bulge is gibbus.

How is Scoliosis diagnosed
The diagnosis is made by a specialist orthopaedist. If you notice that your child has a crooked back or uneven shoulders, it is wise to make an appointment with the general practitioner. He can arrange for a referral to an orthopaedist. The orthopedist will examine the back and make an X-ray. On this X-ray, he/she can see how bad the twisting (Cobb’s angle) is and if there is scoliosis.
Patient story
Exercise Therapy for Scoliosis
Observation: The orthopedist regularly checks scoliosis by means of a back examination and possible X-rays.
Exercise therapy: Special exercises are prescribed to improve posture, strength, mobility, and breathing.
Brace treatment: The curvature is corrected with a corset.
Surgery: During this procedure, the spine is corrected and fixed with screws and rods.
Scoliosis, unfortunately, does not go away by itself. Scoliosis can even worsen while you are still growing. It is therefore important to diagnose the disorder at the earliest possible stage.
